The best coffee in Portland

Nine Portland roasters and cafés, arranged so you can do most of them on foot.

9 entries · verified August 2026

Portland's coffee is concentrated tightly enough that the right answer is to pick one neighbourhood and walk it. Buckman is the best single choice on the east side: Coava, Roseline, Push x Pull and Marigold all sit inside a short radius, four genuinely different styles from one roaster's flagship to a fermentation-forward micro-bar. Kerns, just north, carries the same energy around Heart's roastery café and its no-wifi policy.

Concordia is a quieter north-east pocket built around Extracto's visible 1951 roaster, worth the detour on its own; Mount Scott–Arleta, further south-east, is where Carnelian sits among mostly local regulars rather than visitors. The Pearl District covers the north-west with Sisters' more polished, loft-style room, and Sunnyside is Puff's newer, smaller footprint from a name that goes back to Stumptown's founding.

Splits worth knowing before you plan a route: Coava, Roseline, Marigold, Heart, Extracto and Sisters all roast their own beans on-site or nearby. Push x Pull and Carnelian buy in and focus on preparation and process instead. Neither is the better bet here; it changes what you're actually paying for.

  1. Coava Coffee

    Buckman

The flagship, and the anchor of the best coffee neighbourhood in the city. Reviewers consistently point to the craftsmanship behind each cup and the food pairing: pastries from Farina Bakery, plus vegan and gluten-free options from Petunia's Pies & Pastries. The one recurring knock is an occasional watery shot at busy hours, worth knowing before you order a straight espresso rather than a milk drink.

1300 SE Grand Ave, Portland, OR 97214 · Website

  2. Roseline Coffee

    Buckman

Roaster-café in the same walkable cluster, and a useful contrast to Coava's house style. Open since 2011, favoring lighter, more floral single origins over dark-roast tradition. One reviewer called the cappuccino among the best in the city. Indoor and outdoor seating with retro decor and enough plants to notice.

  3. Push x Pull

    Buckman

Small, focused and firmly in the modern camp. Specializes in unconventionally processed coffee, anaerobic and 72-hour natural fermentation lots, and reviewers describe staff as genuine coffee nerds who'll talk through the bean and the process rather than just pull the shot. Gets crowded at peak hours; the breakfast sandwiches get named almost as often as the coffee.

  4. Marigold Coffee

    Buckman

Women-owned roaster founded in 2009 by sisters Joey and Cassy Gleason, working small-batch and seasonally sourced single origins out of the Buckman Coffee Factory. Reviewers highlight direct relationships with small farms and cooperatives, and seasonal specials like coffee-cherry tea alongside the standard menu.

  5. Heart Coffee

    Kerns

The roastery café, open since October 2009, and the clearest expression of Portland's clean minimalist approach: light roasts, single origins, nothing hiding behind milk. The Honey Cardamom Latte and the Heart Drinking Chocolate are the two drinks reviewers name most. No wifi, deliberately, to keep people talking to each other instead of a screen.

  6. Extracto Coffee

    Concordia

An anchor of Concordia since 2006, roasting single-origin lots on a visible 1951 cast-iron UG22 Probat that's often mid-run when you walk in. Reviewers single out the Guatemala and the house "11 of Spades" blend as the ones worth ordering, and describe the cup as smooth rather than bitter. Worth the trip for the room as much as the cup.

  7. Sisters Coffee Company

    Pearl District

A family-owned Central Oregon roastery running since 1989. The Ethiopians are the reason to go, and reviewers also point to the food menu (a scramble box, a lox box) as unusually good for a coffee shop, plus three separate vegan-milk options.

  8. Carnelian Coffee

    Mount Scott–Arleta

A genuine neighbourhood spot in the south-east, open since 2017, far enough out that you will mostly be among locals. The room doubles as an eclectic geological display, thundereggs and rock specimens alongside the usual café furniture, which explains the entry below. Reviews are strong on the coffee and vegan options; a minority flag inconsistent front-of-house service, worth knowing rather than dismissing outright.

7950 SE Foster Rd, Portland, OR 97206 · Website

  9. Puff Coffee

    Sunnyside

Duane Sorenson's post-Stumptown roasting project, which means decades of sourcing pedigree behind a comparatively new name. A tighter, roastery-first footprint than his old flagship, single-origin micro-lots over a sprawling menu, and reviewers describe the vibe as stripped-back and unpretentious rather than a victory-lap sequel.
