The best coffee in Austin
Ten Austin cafés and roasters worth crossing town for, by neighbourhood.
10 entries · verified August 2026
Austin was named the top coffee city in America in Food & Wine's 2026 Global Tastemakers awards, which is the kind of accolade that sends a lot of people to the same three cafés. This list is organised the way you would actually use it — by where you already are.
East Austin is the centre of gravity. Converted houses and industrial spaces hold most of the city's more experimental roasters, and it is the neighbourhood where a coffee-only trip makes the most sense.
South Congress and South First mix coffee into a retail and music corridor, so the cafés there are built for sitting rather than for a queue of commuters.
North Loop and Hyde Park are the neighbourhood-café end of the scale: quality without the pilgrimage.
What we optimised for
Extraction over interior design, with one deliberate exception at the bottom of the list. Shops that roast their own beans are favoured, because in a city with this many roasters the ones buying wholesale are rarely the reason to travel.
Houndstooth Coffee
North Loop
One of the roasters that set the standard locally, and still the safest recommendation in the city for someone who wants a well-pulled espresso without hunting for it.
4200 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78756 · Website
Cuvée Coffee
Rainey District
Roasting in Austin since 1998, which makes it the closest thing the city has to an institution in specialty coffee. The original East Austin location closed in 2024; the Rainey District café carries the pedigree now.
48 East Ave, Austin, TX 78701 · Website
Merit Coffee
A local roaster that grew into a small chain without losing the quality that got it there. Reliable across locations, which matters more than it sounds.
222 W Ave Ste 120, Austin, TX 78701 · Website
Civil Goat Coffee
Small local roaster with a following among people who care about the bean more than the room.
3423 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78705 · Website
Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden
South Austin
The one on this list you go to for the setting as much as the cup — a large outdoor garden that works for a long morning rather than a quick flat white.
121 Pickle Rd Ste 111, Austin, TX 78704 · Website
Desnudo Coffee
Firmly in the third-wave camp: short menu, careful extraction, the kind of place where the barista has an opinion about the roast.
2505 Webberville Rd, Austin, TX 78702 · Website
Palomino Coffee
A neighbourhood café that draws on Latin American coffee traditions, and one of the shops most often named when locals are asked rather than tourists.
4136 E 12th St, Austin, TX 78721 · Website
Haraz Coffee House
Yemeni coffee house — cardamom-spiced preparations and a completely different tradition from everything else on this list. Go for the contrast.
500 W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd Ste A, Austin, TX 78701 · Website
CaPhein Coffee
Vietnamese-influenced coffee, which in practice means the robusta and condensed-milk end of the spectrum done properly instead of as a novelty.
3016 Guadalupe St Ste B175, Austin, TX 78705 · Website
Mozart's Coffee Roasters
Lake Austin
Not the best coffee on this list and everyone knows it. It is on here because the deck over Lake Austin is genuinely one of the best places in the city to drink anything at all.
