How to make a cortado at home without an espresso machine

Ordering and Brewing

A moka pot and a small pan of milk gets you close enough — no machine, no steam wand, under ten minutes.

What you actually need

A moka pot, milk, a small glass, and something to warm the milk in, a saucepan or a milk frother if you own one. No espresso machine required. A moka pot runs on steam pressure alone, roughly 1.5 to 2 bar by the time it's fully underway, against the 9 bar an espresso machine's pump forces through the puck — nowhere close, and not enough to build real crema. But it's still concentrated enough to stand in for a shot at this ratio, where the milk is doing half the work anyway.

The coffee

Grind slightly finer than you would for drip, fill the moka pot's basket level without tamping it down, and pull it off the heat the moment the flow turns pale and starts sputtering. That's the point where it's pulling in more air than coffee, and letting it run past that scorches whatever comes out last.

The milk

Warm whole milk gently until it's hot to the touch but well short of simmering, then agitate it briefly: a few seconds with a milk frother, or thirty seconds of hard shaking in a sealed jar. You're after a little texture, not a full microfoam cap. A cortado is mostly milk-not-foam to begin with, so a steam wand was never doing that much work in the original drink either.

Putting it together

Equal parts moka-pot coffee and warmed milk, poured into a small glass rather than a mug, for the same reason as ordering one out: a glass shows the two layers settling against each other, which a mug just hides. If you want to get closer to the traditional look, pour the coffee first and add the milk after rather than mixing them in the pot.

Where this falls short

Beyond the pressure gap, a moka pot also extracts far slower: three to four minutes of contact time against the 25 to 30 seconds a real shot gets, which is part of why an over-fine grind turns bitter so fast here. The crema stays thin no matter what you do. It won't fool anyone who orders cortados daily, and it isn't meant to. What it will get you is something genuinely worth drinking on a morning when leaving the house isn't on the agenda, made in less time than the drive to a café would take.
